When I tried to download an image from the activities pane, Photos crashes!
I had this problem too. I had like 7,000 pictures on my iPhone and I was trying to import them straight into Photos. I then decided to use Image Capture and there is an option to import into Photos at the bottom of the Image Capture window.
What has changed since i wored?

I also tried to do a repair and it didn't help. My wife airdropped some photos and then this started happening.

First, this happened right after I installed Sierra on my iMac & MacBook Pro, and Photos crashed after I first opened after "upgrading" and after restarting the iMac and repairing the Photos library.
